SEDAT HAKKI ELDEM


Sedat Hakkı ELDEM was born in 1908 in Istanbul. He studied in architecture department in Fine Arts Academy between 1924 and 1928. After the graduated, he studied with Auguste Perret in France, and studied with Hans Poelzig in Germany. He, also, met Le Corbusier. After he turned back to Turkey in 1931, he studied with Mongery, and in 1932, he started to work in Fine Arts Academy as an assistant.


In 1930’s, he was one of the member of the Europe Functionalism’s agents. In addition to this, he trended to create a national order, because he was influenced by the nationalism movement in Europe and nationalism principles of new Republic, and in order to provide this, he led to be opened “National Architecture Seminar”. Ideas developing in these years formed the”2nd National Architecture Order” design principles.


Eldem was one of the person who led to be used traditional motif in architectural design with research and studying related Ottoman Houses, 18th-19th centuries palace, pavilion, and classical Ottoman Architecture. He studied at institutions which save the historical places. He, also, represented Turkey in International Architectures Association which was held first in 1948 in Lozan after 2nd World War.


He died in 1988 in Istanbul.


Main works of Eldem are Firdevs Hanım Evi, Termal Oteli, Taşlık Kahvesi, Ankara Üniversitesi Fen Fakültesi, Istanbul Adliye Binası…

ANKARA UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SCIENCE


Reason of to be built of Ankara University Faculty of Science was that a new idea about built a technical university came into question in those years. In order to carry out, a comprehensive project was initiated, but this project was not completed, just small area was built. Sedad Hakkı ELDEM designed the Ankara University Faculty of Science with Emin ONAT. Then this building was built between 1943 and 1945 years. It is described as a trailblazer and monumental building in 2nd National Architecture Movement.




In terms of design, Ankara University Faculty of Science carries more determined identity than Istanbul University Science and Art Faculty. It is monumental and bare. In addition to these, it was saved from conflicting qualification which belongs to traditional home architecture substantially.
